Between the Notes
A NOVEL
Between the Notes
Some parts of us are only waiting to be heard again.
A woman who has stopped making space for herself and a musician who has lost faith in his own voice are drawn into an unexpected connection that quietly reshapes both of their lives.
Sometimes, you have to listen for what comes next.
About the Book
Five months after the end of her marriage, Eve Mercer is still figuring out what comes next. Her two teenagers are building lives of their own, her career keeps moving forward, and Eve is beginning to realize how much of herself she set aside along the way.
Then one night, she hears music coming through the wall of her townhouse.
On the other side is Gideon Brooks, a working musician starting over in a new home while struggling to find his way back to his own music. Eve leaves him a note thanking him for the unexpected song. He writes back. Soon, music and messages are passing between two neighbors who haven’t even properly met.
When Eve and Gideon finally discover who’s been on the other side of the wall, their unexpected connection begins pulling both of them toward something neither was looking for—and toward parts of themselves they thought they’d left behind.
Between the Notes is a warm, hopeful novel about second chances, rediscovering the things that once made us feel most alive, and finding connection in the most unexpected places.
LATER-IN-LIFE ROMANCE | SECOND CHANCES | MUSIC | STARTING OVER
Meet Eve Mercer
Eve Mercer is good at taking care of what needs to be taken care of. Her career. Her two teenagers. The thousand small responsibilities that fill a life. After the end of her marriage, she’s determined to prove—to herself as much as anyone—that she can handle whatever comes next.
The problem is that somewhere along the way, Eve became so good at making space for everyone else that she stopped making much for herself.
Then she starts hearing music through the wall.
At first, it’s simply an unexpected bright spot at the end of the day. Then it becomes a conversation. A connection. And eventually, a reminder of a younger version of Eve who played music herself, followed her curiosity, and didn’t always need a practical reason to want something.
Gideon may be the person on the other side of the wall, but the life Eve begins rediscovering is entirely her own.
Read an Excerpt
Eve is nearly asleep when she hears something.
She frowns behind the sleep mask and listens again. No, it’s not Noah cheering or Sam talking or either of her kids rummaging around the kitchen for food. Thinking she imagined it, Eve closes her eyes again and starts doing her mental trick of breathing and counting backwards from one hundred.
There’s no denying the sound when it happens again.
Eve takes off the sleep mask and listens, adjusting her pillows to clear her ears. She sits up when she realizes the thing she’s hearing is music. A guitar strum, a chord pattern. She cocks her head when the whisper of familiarity triggers something in her brain.
She knows the song.
Odd. She can’t place it yet. It’s not coming from upstairs, so that eliminates the stereos from both kids’ rooms. It’s not coming from the TV room outside her closed bedroom door. The music is soft, almost ethereal.
Then she realizes the music isn’t coming from a stereo.
It’s live.
Someone is playing guitar. And singing.
And the music is coming through her wall.
